Goa Carnival - Famous Beach Festival

Goa is a land of celebrations and festivals. The enthusiastic Goa celebrates a lot many festivals among which Goa Carnival is the most celebrated one. Exclusive to Goa, the Carnival is a time for frolic and merrymaking. Thanks to Portuguese who introduced this festival Goans in the 18th century. It is a time when Christians and Hindus, young and old all are engrossed in the festivities. With the advent of February, the preparations for the festival starts. The three day long festival makes Goa more lively and vivacious. The locals and the tourists all are attracted towards this festival of Goa.

Just before the austere days of Lent for 40 days, the people of Goa indulge in merrymaking through feasting and drinking. You get to see the big parades, processions, bands, and the melody of music, songs, musical instruments etc. Over the years, the carnival has become synonymous to the sparkling spirit of Goa. Though it was initiated as a local feast but it has changed a bit over the years. The striking floats and the pageantry make the carnival more distinguishable. It concludes with the red and black dance which is held by the Club National in Panajim.

Goa Carnival in its Historical Times

Many theories abound for explaining the origin of Goa Carnival. The word Carnival is a Latin word which means “giving up meat”. It indicates the relish with which meat dishes are eaten during the festivities before Lent. In its initial times, the festival was celebrated by Portuguese by throwing eggs, flour, oranges lemons mud and dirty water at each other with a spirit of fun. This act signify getting rid of old and dirty things before Lent.

Attractions of Goa Carnival

The festival falls on Sabato Gordo (Fat Saturday) when the festivities are enjoyed for whole three days and night. King Momo presides the feast and asks the subjects to be happy and leave their worries. This indicates the starting of the feast and merrymaking for three days. In th evening grand balls are organized. You could witness a riot of colors during the festival.

The festival involves music, masked dances, cross dressings, and mock battles which are called cocotes. Also another interesting event is when the youngsters raid their neighbor's kitchens with a trick or treat alternative. It is really amusing and is called assaltos. The ball in Red and Black dance culminates the festivities. A liberal use of feni peps up the spirit of Goa Carnival. The spectacular feast has become a center of attraction for many now.

Tulsi Ki Chai: For Hindus Tulsi is sacred plant and it also contains lot of medicinal properties. It can be found in almost every India kitchen. In winters it can be used to make a 'hot tulsi ki chai' ; while in summers it can be used to make sharbat. This magical herb is equally good for the health also.

Ingredients : Tulsi leaves, 2-3 tsp sugar, saffron or kewra essence along with ice.

Method : Pick up the fresh Tulsi leaves from the garden and grins them into a paste. Take 2 tsp of tulsi paste into the glass, add sugar according to your taste, add kewra essence and lot of ice. This unique flavored drink will keep you healthy and cool in the heat.

Badam ki Thandai : Badam ki Thandai is a exclusive drink known for its cooling properties, unique flavor and taste.

Ingredients : Almonds, sugar, poppy seeds, black pepper, melon seeds, ani seeds, cardamom, rose petals and saffron.

Method : Make a mixture of all the above specified ingredients and make a powder. Put the powder into the glass, add half glass milk and ice to it. Stir them well with the spoon and the drink is ready.

Jaljeera : Jaljeera is one of the most common drink in India. It is easy to make and keep the digestive system in control during the summers. Jal is Hindi word meaning 'Water' and Jeera means Cumin seeds

Ingredients : 2 tbsp dry roasted and ground cuminseeds, 2 tbsp mint leaves paste, ½ tsp cilantro leaves paste, 1 tbsp amchur, ½ tsp black salt, 2 tbsp lemon juice, bit suggar, 5 cups cold waterand 5 tbsp mint leaves (for garnishing)

Method : Take a bowl and mix all the above ingredient. Add water, sugar and garnish the mint leaves. Ans now serve the drink to your guests.

Jaljeera is one of the most popular drink. It is most easy and instant to make. It refreshes you immediately. It is salty and spicy lemonade. Jaljeera has got unique taste, if you want you can add black salt to add more spice to it. You will surely enjoy this drink.

Mango Shake : There are around 10 varieties of mangoes found in India. Among all the drinks in India, Mango shake is the most favorite drink that people of all ages love to have during the summer months. .

Ingredients : 1 mango, 1 tsp sugar, ½ glass milk, dry fruits and ice.

Method : Cut the mangoes into the small pieces, put them into the juice mixture, than add milk and sugar to it and grind all the three things together. After 2 minutes, put ice and dry fruits for the flavour. Churn well. Pour it into the glass and serve.

If  you want than you can add roohafza or any other flavour that you like stwarberry, vanalia or chocolate.
