Later on it was occupied by the Haider Ali in 1763 AD and than by the British. At the entrance of the fort is the Anjaneya temple and in the middle is the observatory tower. Thalassery Fort :

Kodagu Kerala

The mountainous region of Kodagu, lies 100 km west of Mysore in the Western Ghats, its eastern fringes meeting with the Mysore Plateau. The capital of Kodagu is Madikeri. Popularly known as the 'Scotland of India', Kodagu is located at the height of 1,525 m above the sea level. Formerly it was known by its anglicized name of Coorg. The Kodagu district comprises of three taluks – Madikeri, Virajpet, and Somwarpet. The highest peak here is Tadiandamol that rises to 1,750 m and second highest peak Pushpagiri at the height of 1,715 m. With its rugged hilly, dense green rainforest's, cardamom estates, coffee plantations and swathes of rush rice paddy, it is one of the south India's most scenic areas.

Sightseeing at Kodagu :

Madikeri Fort :

Madikeri Fort is the most important attraction of Kodagu. It was built by the Raja Lingarajendra II in the 19th century. The fort houses the temple, a chapel, prison and a small museum. It now served as the municipal headquarters.

Raja's Seat :

According the legend the Raja Lingarajendra used to spend time here in the evening. The panoramic view from Raja's seat is breathtaking. Behind are the gardens, a toy train line for kids and a tiny Kodava style temple.

Omkareshwara Temple :

Kollam in Kerala

Kollam located 74 km northwest of Thiruvananthapuram and 85 km south of Alappuzha, is a vibrating backwater destination, tucked between the eight cornered Ashtamudi Lake and Lakshadweep Sea. It was notified as the sanctuary in he year 1973 and is an extension of the Bandipur National Park at its southern border.

The sanctuary is most famous for its tigers and lions along with the other wildlife attractions that includes Panthers, Jungle Cats, Civet Cats, Monkeys, Wild Dogs, Bisons, Deer and Bears. Even the park has fairy good reptile population with large number of snakes and monitor lizards. It is also a popular for bird watching. Some of the exotic bird species found here includes Peacock, Babblers, Cuckoos, Owl, Woodpecker and Jungle Fowl.

Kannur :

Kannur is an important coastal town bounded by the western ghats in the east, Arabian sea in the wet, Kasargode district in the north and Ponicherry in the south. It is located at the distance of 310 km from Kochi. He city is most famous for the hand loom and beedi industries. It the headquarters of the country's largest and best seller beedi cooperative which produces the famous brand, Kerala Dinesh Beedi.

Some of the major attraction of Kannur includes Sundareswara Temple, Mavilakavu Temple, Urpazhachivaku Temple, Sasta Temple, Payyambalam Beach and Muzhapilangad Beach.

Parambikulam Wildlife Sanctuary in Kerala

Parambikulam Wildlife Sanctuary is like a beautiful scenery – small, but full of exotic pictures. Spread to the total area of 285 sq km, it is situated in the Annamalai hills of the western ghats to the south of Palakkad (Palghat) Gap in the Palakkad district of Kerala. It is the third biggest wildlife sanctuary in Kerala. There are three dams in the Sanctuary, Parambikula (21.22 sq km expanse of water), Thunakadavu (4.33 sq km) and Peruvarippallam (2.89 sq km), and the Kerala Government has plans to launch another hydroelectric project inside the park. The best time to visit this park is from September to January.

Flora of Parambikulam Wildlife Sanctuary :

Set admits the hills of Annamalai and Nelliampathy, more than half of the park has fine stands of teak. Thick forests re found in the higher reaches of the hills. The main viewing area is in the coere of the park full of bamboo, sandalwood, rosewood and teak. Kannimara tree forms the main highlight of the floral asset of the park. The tree stands at a height of 48.5 m and has a girth of 6.57m. It is said to be 450 years old. It is probably the last survivor of the wild teak that once grew in this area.

Fauna of Parambikulam Wildlife Sanctuary :

Parambikulam is one of the biggest territory of Gaur (bison). While other attractions of the forest includes elephants, sloth bears, wild boars, sambhars, chital tigers, panthers and crocodiles. There are also bonnet macaques, spectacled cobras, kraits, vipers, turtles, darters, little cormorants and black eagles.

Cruising :

The best chances of viewing the wildlife are during the boat rides on Parambikulam, Thunakadavu and Peruvarippalam inside the park. It offers you the opportunity to spot the Mugger crocodiles that can be seen sun bathing on the lake shore. You can hire rowboats from the Forest Department at the cost of Rs 200 for 5 persons, for one hour, rs 400 for a group of upto 8 or more.

Birding :

To take the essence of the park, experience the early morning bird life and exquisite bird songs (larks, thrushes, warblers): take in spectacular sightings of the large flock of jungle myna, woodpecker, rose-winged and blue-winged parakeet. Make its a point to carry binoculars and a copy of Salim Ali's Birds list.

Trekking tours :

In you want to enjoy trekking inside the park, it is mandatory to be accompanied by a guide. Although there are three three teks conducted inside the park, but the best trek at the Parambikulam Sanctuary is to the Karimala Gopuram, which is also the highest peak. But please keep in mind that you are medically fit as it requires lot of strength and energy. You may even get the chance to spot the highly endangered Nilgiri Tahr on these hills.

Periyar National Park


The Periyar National Park is simply spectacular. Aptly called the land of blare, trumpet and song, this forest of flowing river, blue waters as well as teak and sal variegated glades is a world to Asian Elephants, where unexpected sights and sounds present themselves at almost every turn. Set in the hills of the western ghats in the state of Kerala, Periyar National Park is also a popular Tiger Reserve. Also known as Thekkady, it is one of the oldest protected areas in the country. The park has a picturesque lake at the heart of the sanctuary, formed by the building of a dam towards the end of the last century in 1895. The reservoir of this dam passes through the wooded hills and is a perennial source of water for wildlife. Periyar is gloriously rich in an amazing variety of fascinating wildlife, ideally characterized by a unique and pristine ecological system. The best time to plan out the trip to Periyar National Park lies between the month of September to March.

Flora of Periyar National Park :

The rich flora of Periyar National Park comprises of Moist Deciduous Forest. Tropical Evergreen Forests and Semi Evergreen forests. The marshy areas near the edges of the lake and other water bodies are full of tall grasslands, making the region one of the richest habitat for some of the rare and endangered species. The thick vegetation in the park comprises of succulent shoots and grasses. The major trees in the park include the Teak, Rosewood, Terminalia, Eucalyptus, Sandalwood, Banyan, Pipal, Plumeria, Gulmohar and Bamboo among many others.

Fauna of Periyar National Park :

Periyar is one of the finest habitat of the Asian elephants. Large herds, with the baby elephants elephants roaming in th park can be spotted quite easily. Apart from Gaur, Sambar, Wild pigs, Barking Deer, Mouse Deer, Dole or Indian Wild Dog, Nilgiri Thar, Nilgiri Langur, Gee's Common Langur are the other attractions of the park. There are estimated 40 Tigers in the Periyar National Park. The lake inside the park also attracts lot of bird life – darters, grey herons and cormorants and the great Malabar hornbill and grey hornbill.

Varkala Beach

Enchanting Varkala is like none other. It is beautiful at the same time interesting. For the tourists, the greatest lure of Varkala lies entirely in its sea shore. Having the long affair with Arabian Sea, it is the most famous beach destination in India. Varkala is located 54 km north west of Thiruvananthapuram, atop a 2 km long laterite cliff that looks down some of Kerala's' most picturesque beaches. The boundless blue water and miles of golden sand washed along with the cool soothing palms and gentle waves make it a paradise.
